Alchemy is, simply put, the transformation of matter, most notably by turning base metals into gold. It is highly advanced magic that has become regarded as the most difficult to grasp. Because of this, it exists as a very small niche within the magical world. Alchemy is also deeply philosophical in nature which does draw quite the following in all magical schools around the world.
In an ironic twist, it is the direct predecessor of chemistry, the first chemistry teachers having been renown alchemists teaching the non-magical people. There is a non-magical equivalent of alchemy that they teach themselves, revolving around the idea of creating an elixir of life through a philosopher's stone. Although historically such a thing has existed, it hasn't since the 1100s. As a result it has become a giant joke for them to watch the Nonbloods search for this.
Due to the nature of alchemy, it is closely related to potion making. Since there isn't a high demand, Alchemy is offered only as an elective when there is a sufficient demand, only to sixth and seventh years, and the option to do an independent study in the graduate program. Alchemy was considered an old field of study back in antiquity, making it a field of study from the time period of ancient magic, although not connected to the powerful magic.
The alchemy teacher at Gerhardt is Eris Rizian, a recent Gerhardt graduate from the class of 2006.
