Music class

Any Nonblood student that enters Music class at Gerhardt would feel right at home in their nonmagical upbringing. Although there are a couple of magical instruments for the students to learn, the majority are non magical within the class. It always has been believed that music was its own form of magic; a uniting feature within the world belonging to everyone. The only such idea in the world that has no opposition.

Professor Kenneth Fiske has described his music class as follows:

"I feel that I am not teaching you all merely music. I feel that I am teaching you life. Without music, our souls lack something that they desperately need. Music is a universal language that can heal wounds, bridge gaps in understanding, and mend cultures that have ravaged one another. You feel the emotions that music encapsulates, and that can relay far more than any spell or finely articulated statement ever could. Music is the language of our souls, and it will always be understood to one another, regardless of our blood status, our backgrounds, our pasts, or even our prejudices. I want to pass onto you the wisdom I have learned from music, and how it can benefit you in your lives."

The musical selections that Professor Fiske provides in his class range from classical pieces, to traditional wizarding pieces, to modern music - both wizard and non-magical. Although the class is an elective, most students join the class in their third year to have an extracurricular that the rest of the school can enjoy. There are four distinct bands and orchestral bodies that Gerhardt houses, and it is an honor for those students that are in the body to be a member for all of their remaining years at the school

It had been proposed to make music class a mandatory class for first years, but the administration of Gerhardt decided against it for the educational value of it's students. However, some first years have joined the music class, and quite a few second years. Those that already play an instrument have an easier time joining the class than those that don't; however, there is a choir that Gerhardt houses as well, led by Professor Circe Dallan, Professor Fiske's apprentice. The choir has won two North American competitions under Professor Dallan's leadership, giving the choir of Gerhardt the honor of an invitation to perform at the swearing in of the Magical President in Philadelphia, however, they had to decline due to finals happening that very same week.
